Meeting Followup Notes

Journaling Prompts

  • You are 90 years old. You have lived a beautiful life. Describe your life. (get as detailed and pie in the sky as you like!)

What would you want your younger self to know?

  • Exploring:

We talked about the fact that you are really compelled by the idea of travelling and exploring other cultures, by true immersion.

A key point that came up was your experience in Africa — the safari was amazing but the biggest, most lasting sense of meaning came at the end of the trip when you visited and engaged with an orphanage.

As you imagine your next phase, how might this desire and experience become more than a one off adventure? Note – no need to make plans or spend time thinking about why this might not be possible. You have complete permission to dream right now! Just go with it. If you come up with objections, you can make a little list somewhere and not lose them. Or if you begin to come up with practicalities, that is fine too. Again just make a side note. But really give yourself some room here.

    Journalling: Emily the Explorer!

    Some prompts to work with:

I am fully immersed in another culture. Here is what my day looks like:

My interest in exploring other cultures is rooted in…..

Does my interest include bringing others along? If so, why? What do I want these travel companions to experience?

When I think about helping others, these are the top 3 concerns I want to address…..

    I’ve always wondered about…….

I’ve always wanted to learn to…….

I am the main character in a story called Emily The Explorer. This is how I behave…..

    These are my sidekicks…….

    My adventure starts with………

    My heart yearns for……….

You are moving ahead in your exploration of the City Year position. We are looking forward to hearing how the conversations go and what transpires! As we discussed — take the time to really pay attention to what it is you are looking for in a new position. What worked for you at Destination Cleveland? What is no longer working? Why? Do you “own” any of the difficulties? As Jon Kabat Zinn famously said, Wherever You Go, There You Are. Which is irritating as heck. But so true. You bring yourself along to any new place/adventure/job.

It’s good to get to know that self as deeply as possible (which is what you are doing).
